Here are step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows updates:

1. Open Windows Update Settings:

  • Click on the Start menu.
  • Go to Settings (the gear icon).
  • Click on "Update & Security."

2. Check for Updates:

  • In the Windows Update tab, click on "Check for updates."
  • Windows will now search for available updates, including optional ones.

3. Download Updates:

  • If updates are found, click on "Download."
  • If optional updates are detected, they are not mandatory but recommended, especially if you are encountering issues with your device or connecting to peripherals such as monitors, printers, mice, or keyboards. To view these updates, click on "View all optional updates" and use the dropdown tabs to see all available Optional Windows and Driver updates. You can then select all or your preferred updates and choose "Download and install."
  • Wait for the download to complete. The time taken will depend on the size of the updates and your internet speed.

4. Install Updates:

  • Once the download is complete, click on "Install now" to begin the installation process.
  • Windows may require you to restart your computer to complete the installation. Save any work and click "Restart now" if prompted.

That's it! Following these steps should allow you to install Windows updates on your Windows device. If you encounter any issues with these instructions, send an email to qhsit@queensu.ca.
