Setting up MFA for generic NetIDs

Modified on Tue, Nov 26 at 3:46 PM

To setup MFA use the following link to sign in: https://aka.ms/mfasetup

If MFA has already been setup for the generic account you will need someone who has already set it up for the NetID to approve your sign-in.

MFA Limitations:

   - only 1 person can receive code via text

   - only 3 phones can receive code via phone call (primary, alternate, office)

   - only 5 people can setup MFA via the authenticator app

Best practice:

   - The best option for MFA for a generic account is to add MFA using the authenticator app.

Adding MFA to the Microsoft Authenticator app

1. Login to https://aka.ms/mfasetup

2. Enter email address and password for the account

(If this is a new generic account you will be prompted to setup MFA)

3. Click NEXT.

4. As recommended we suggest setting up MFA using the Microsoft Authenticator app - you do have the option 'I want to set up a different method' in which you can add a phone number (to receive a code via text or call)

5. Click Next again

6. You will see a QR code on the next screen open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone (if you do not have it installed you can install it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

7. If you have not added an account before you will have the first screen with an ADD ACCOUNT button. If you already have an account setup in the authenticator app you will click the + (add) button in the top right and select 'Work or school account' on the next screen.

8. Next select 'Scan a QR code'

9. The next screen will be a window from your phones camera - center the QR code on the screen in the highlighted square

10. Once the QR code is scanned you should see a prompt on your phone indicating the account has been added successfully

11. Click the blue Next button on your computer screen

12. You will be sent a test prompt to your authenticator app to input the number on your computer screen

13. Type the number in the authenticator app and tap YES

14. You will be asked to unlock/approve the sign in using your phones code or biometric (fingerprint, face unlock)

15. Once you have completed this it will indicate that the Notification has been approved

16. Click Next and Done
